Elizabeth Marie Rios Condemns CCA at Shutdown Stewart County Detention C...

Elizabeth Marie Rios is the wife of a former detainee at Stewart County Detention Center. She spoke directly to the CCA & ICE officials who were blocking the gate to the complex on CCA Road. She denounces the horrors to which she and her husband were subjected while he was detained at the facility: not knowing or being able to find out where he was; the almost impossible & arduous journey to get from North Charlestown, South Carolina, to the facility, to which no public transportation is available; the water that turns one's clothes green & one's skin grey; & the city of Lumpkin, which is one of the poorest in the country - it receives almost no benefit from having the facility in the area, while inmates are coerced into performing all of the work!

She was introduced by Anton Flores-Maisonet. Anton is an activist, speaker, writer, husband, father, & co-founder of Alterna - a missional community comprised of US citizens and Latino immigrants.

CISPES Presentation on Public Education in El Salvador at SOAW Conferenc...

Israel Montano Osorio, the Secretary General of the ANDES 21 de junio public teachers union, spoke about the recent innovations to El Salvador's public education system, based on the values of solidarity, sovereignty & democracy; and the threat to these advances posed by the U.S. government-backed right's possible resurgence in the upcoming elections; introduced & translated by Lisa Fuller, at the SOA Watch 2013 annual conference in Columbus, Georgia.

Israel Montano Osorio obtained his teacher's license in music studies and sociology while studying in San Miguel, El Salvador. As a student, Israel became part of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), the leftist guerrilla army that fought against El Salvador's repressive army during the country's 12-year civil war (1980-1992). As a long-time teacher and activist, Montano became affiliated with ANDES 21 de Junio, the National Association of Salvadoran Educators in 1985. At this time, the union suffered brutal repression by the military government. Montano is currently serving as the union's secretary general and has traveled extensively giving presentations on El Salvador's educational struggles and on the FMLN's social service programs that it has been able to implement since their first electoral victory in 2009.

A concomitant speaking tour of the west coast was conducted with Francisca Iraheta Romero:

http://www.cispes.org/programs/speaking-tours/west-coast-road-victory-speaking-tour/

Israel & Francisca made an urgent plea for observer accompaniment for El Salvador's February 2014 elections:

Petition the U.S. Ambassador to hold Drummond accountable for its flagrant violation of the provisions in the Colombia-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, and of Colombian law: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5436/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=12795

Anibal Perez is the President of ASOTRED-Puerto (Asociacion de Trabajadores Enfermos de Drummond), the Association of ex-Drummond port employees who became sick while working at Drummond. He works with those who have become seriously ill or injured while working for Drummond Coal in the Department of Cesar and the port at Ciénaga.

Aníbal has played a major role in making public the January 13th Drummond coal spill by sending photos of the sinking barge to media outlets. It was not until after these photos appeared publicly that Drummond filed a report about the spill. He then aided with the environmental investigation into Drummond, resulting in death threats to him and his family. This is an opportunity to hear Aníbal speak about his experience organizing for workers' rights and environmental rights in northeast Colombia.

SOAW Vigil at Stewart Co Dtn Cntr (11-19-13) : Dominique Diaddigo-Cash

SOAW Vigil at Stewart Co Dtn Cntr (11-19-13) : Dominique Diaddigo-Cash

Dominique is an organizing intern at SOA Watch this year. Dominique began with the organization in January 2013, after moving from Minneapolis, where he helped to facilitate the growth of an ecological movement for people of color in urban areas, protested with the American Indian Movement, and supported the actions of Occupy Homes.  He first learned about SOA Watch after the coup in Honduras ousted Manuel Zelaya in 2009, and has been following us in the news and through our own media, as well as organizing teach-ins and distributing literature ever since.  Dominique joined us at Ft. Benning for the first time in 2012, and is eager to gain greater hands-on experience in supporting our struggle.
