CISPES Presentation on Public Education in El Salvador at SOAW Conferenc...

Israel Montano Osorio, the Secretary General of the ANDES 21 de junio public teachers union, spoke about the recent innovations to El Salvador's public education system, based on the values of solidarity, sovereignty & democracy; and the threat to these advances posed by the U.S. government-backed right's possible resurgence in the upcoming elections; introduced & translated by Lisa Fuller, at the SOA Watch 2013 annual conference in Columbus, Georgia.

Israel Montano Osorio obtained his teacher's license in music studies and sociology while studying in San Miguel, El Salvador. As a student, Israel became part of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), the leftist guerrilla army that fought against El Salvador's repressive army during the country's 12-year civil war (1980-1992). As a long-time teacher and activist, Montano became affiliated with ANDES 21 de Junio, the National Association of Salvadoran Educators in 1985. At this time, the union suffered brutal repression by the military government. Montano is currently serving as the union's secretary general and has traveled extensively giving presentations on El Salvador's educational struggles and on the FMLN's social service programs that it has been able to implement since their first electoral victory in 2009.
